Case Study 19
Project type
Kitchen extension
Project description
The plan was to transform a dark and cold kitchen into a light and spacious kitchen and family room – transforming this area of the ground floor from a space the client used under duress to a space they loved to be in.
The wall adjacent to the side alleyway was completely removed and the upper floors supported by a steel box frame. The room was extended into the alleyway using the original bricks removed from the side wall to ensure continuity of brick style on the external wall and the new open space above was covered with patent glazing.
The result is a vast open space creating the impression that the room is now over double the size before the project – despite the room only extending by 1.75m in width (the space acquired from enclosing the alleyway). In addition, the window looking into the garden was removed, and a 4 panel sliding glass door was installed resulting in a room that is now flooded with light.
